Kidney Stone Removal – A Patient Story

Wayne Bruno: I had some kidney stone problems and I worked with Dr. Grunewald at Sauk Prairie hospital. I don't think they come close to childbirth, but that's why if men were to have babies, everybody would have one. I think it is extremely painful. I mean, it it's extremely painful.

What I kept thinking was is that this must be from working out. This must be for my job. This must be from lifting all those weights. And I knew in the back of my mind that it was a kidney stone, but I put it off. And I probably put it off for way too long – probably anywhere between a month and six weeks; which did nothing but cause more complications.

At first, I thought it would be uncomfortable. But then I realized I gave him a good grade because he was a good student and then I felt much more comfortable. So when I went in and saw him – and he graduated in the same class as my son – so it turned out that he's very professional. He knows what he's doing. And I felt very, very comfortable then after meeting with them and talking with him.

He said, you don't want to be back in here in a couple of years with more stones and have more kidney problems. And that's true. So I am changing. I'm doing the best I can. I have cut back on my pop consumption or caffeine consumption. I'm drinking more water. I have these little bottles that I fill up and I have them sitting on the counter and then I go down the line and try and drink every one of them before the end of the day.

I have tremendous confidence in this hospital and the medical center here and that they are going to hire good people. And so why would I travel to Madison? I knew Nathan. I knew he had been a good student and what did I have to lose to go in and sit down and talk with him? And once I talked with him and I saw how professional he was and his diagnosis and how he went about it, the process I knew this was where I was going to stay. I mean, it's not like buying a car. You know, you're not shopping for the best deal. You're shopping for the best quality. And I felt it was here. So that's why I decided to stay here.
