Total Knee Replacement: Dan’s Story

Transcript

Dan Lynch: Well, before I had the surgery I was struggling, and I had a little bit of a hard time competing, and I'm a very competitive person and I'm very driven. Just because I'm getting a little age doesn't mean I'm going to give up and quit. So, I decided to go ahead and take this big move, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it might be. I mean, it was actually a very pleasant experience.

My name is Dan Lynch and I'm from Cross Plains, Wisconsin, and I had both my knees replaced at the same time up at Sauk Prairie Healthcare by Dr. Hebert.

I'm a professional horse trainer and I've been training and riding horses for 50 years. And here about, oh, 12, 15 years ago, I started getting arthritis in my knees so bad, it was getting to the point where I was really struggling riding, just doing my everyday work in the pain, taking too much aspirin and Advil.

So, I made the decision, I want to see Dr. Hebert, and I said, "I want this fixed." And he says, "I'm the guy to do it," so I did, and I don't regret a bit of it.

I wish I could've done it earlier, actually. I mean, I have no pain at all anymore. I have absolutely ... I can jog, I can kick a football, I can jump a little. I drove hard, worked hard to rehab. And like I said, I was back riding my show horses in five weeks. And Dr. Hebert said, "Dan, you know your body. Don't abuse them, use them." So that's what I did and I'm just thrilled to death.

And I highly recommend, if you're having knee arthritic problems, bad joints, anywhere in your body, hips, knees, shoulders, get up there to see those people. I have goals set, and even at my age, I'm not done, and I wanted to go forward. And I'm not going to be sitting back here saying, "Poor me," when you can get something done about it.

Take the opportunity with the technology and the new procedures that can be done. Take advantage of it and take care of yourself, and that's what I did. You just got to cowboy up and get it done, as they say.
