Dr. Matthew Hebert - Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Matthew Hebert: My name is Matt Hebert. I'm one of the orthopedic surgeons here at Sauk Prairie Healthcare. My older brother's an orthopedic surgeon. He preceded me into medical school, so I knew what I was getting into. I knew what the process would be like and what the job would be like, and so I kinda followed him in his footsteps. I'm from western Wisconsin, about an hour west of Eau Claire, grew up in a small town, and I've always lived in Wisconsin except for four years as an undergrad at Notre Dame. I went to undergraduate at the University of Notre Dame, then I did my medical school at the University of Wisconsin, and then orthopedic training also at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Their reputation for Sauk Prairie has always been excellent. Training in Madison, we're close enough that we have a very good idea about the reputation of different hospitals, and I'd never heard anything bad about Sauk. And I'd only heard glowing reviews for the care that people received and from the patients that had surgery up here.

What I find most important is educating patients. I think that's a failure a lot of times where doctors don't really allow their patients to truly understand, number one, what the problem is, and then number two, what the potential solutions are for that. So I really look at my role primarily as an educator, and I spend most of my time in the office really telling people and teaching them about their problem, about the potential solutions. And so I think education is really the primary role that we serve.

I think the patient can expect that I'll do a full evaluation of their problem, take all of their concerns and their worries about their problem, try and explain that as best we can, and I think that's the first thing that we need to do is just explain what the problem is. Normally, we're talking about non-operative care well before we ever talk about surgery for their particular problem.
