2020 Recap of The Friends of Sauk Prairie Healthcare

Like so many other organizations, 2020 was a year where things came to a screeching halt for the Friends of Sauk Prairie Healthcare. Our plans for bake sales, card parties, raffle baskets, a volunteer appreciation lunch and gift shop events were all put on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our biggest fundraiser, the SPH Gift Shop, closed in March, reopened in August only to close again in November due to climbing COVID-19 rates. Volunteers were suspended from onsite volunteering, and our Mobile Meals volunteers were also paused for three months. Although our gift shop remains closed, and our onsite volunteers are still suspended, we are grateful to have our offsite Mobile Meals volunteers continuing to serve our community at this time.

Our Love Lights tree lighting ceremony was adapted to a virtual event and captured the sentiment of honoring those with us and those we’ve lost. If you did not have a chance to view that video, the link is can be found HERE. We’ve also posted the printed listing of Love Light tributes on website at HERE

The Friends of SPH’s Board of Directors has continued to meet virtually and was able to review and approve funding requests to continue to support our hospital. We remain committed to providing resources for our hospital and clinics, and look forward to furthering our mission in 2021 of improving our hospital and clinics through service, education and special projects.

FUNDING BY FRIENDS OF SPH

Over $25,000 was committed in 2020 to Sauk Prairie Healthcare by the Friends of SPH. Here are some of the disbursements made by the Friends of SPH:

  • Staff education was supported by funding a staff development and retention program called CNA Pathway. CNA Pathway is a program designed for SPH employees who are interested in acquiring their certification as a Nursing Assistant. Employees participated in the accredited course while being paid for their time in training. Friends of SPH covered class and exam fees as well as wages during the training.
  • To secure a “Baby Hal” Simulator used in Neonatal Resuscitation classes, the Friends agreed to commit support for preventative maintenance if needed allowing our Education Department to receive the mannequin simulator granted by the Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative.
  • Stacking chairs were purchased for the Wellness Center to maintain safety and support participants in exercise classes.
  • Funding was provided to install a sound masking system in the Emergency Department waiting room and reception area to enhance patient privacy.
  • A lectern was purchased for use in the SPH conference room to replace an older patient room over-the-bed table that was being used by presenters.
  • The Friends partnered with the SPH Foundation to provide each staff member and appreciation gift of SPH Logowear to thank them for their commitment during the extraordinary pandemic.
  • Additional funding requests were approved and are awaiting delivery due to delays caused by the pandemic.

SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY
We appreciate the collaboration of our Friends Supporters and community members in 2020.

  • Our Friends of SPH Supporters continued to sponsor our Love Lights project in a virtual format in 2020.
  • Hundreds of newborn hats were knitted, and dozens of blankets were donated to comfort patients.
  • Three blood drives were organized with the American Red Cross.
  • Although not directly a Friends initiative, many of our Friends supporters were involved with sewing handmade face masks in support of the “We Not Me” community campaign. In all, over 5,000 masks were received by SPH and put into the hands of community members to help prevent spreading the Coronavirus.

Thank you so much for your continued support and generosity.

MOBILE MEALS – FRIENDS OF SPH DELIVERY
The Friends deliver Mobile Meals the 3rd and 4th weeks of February and again the 3rd and 4th weeks of July. We are looking for teams to help with meal deliveries. If you are able to help at all, please indicate it on your renewal form, or contact the Volunteer Office at 643-7257 or theresa.douglas@saukprairiehealthcare.org. Our Committee Chair, Linda Michaels, will once again coordinate schedules to cover our weeks. Thanks to Linda for her help!

SPRING EVENTS?
The spring newsletter normally has us announcing when our next bake sale and card party are taking place. Unfortunately, we are still in a holding pattern, unsure of when we will be able to gather together again safely. When the time is right, you can be assured we will be in touch!
